About

Florina Maris

I am a self-taught artist from Romania specializing in abstract painting using acrylics on canvas. My educational background is in textile engineering — researching and studying textile materials, including fibers, yarn, and fabrics, to design quality products and develop new production techniques.

Life

After many years living in Canada and pursuing a career in bookkeeping while raising my only child, I found myself longing for more. My love of design led me to a new career path, starting a home renovation business designing interior spaces and using color and physical form to create beautiful environments.

Art

In 2016, I began exploring new creative activities with my teenage daughter while facing a new challenge that had presented itself — anxiety. This led to the beginning of a passion for abstract painting, and I have been creating pieces ever since discovering this art form, branching out into different mediums such as clay and cement. For many years, I was enamored with Lake Erie and its surrounding communities. In my mid-fifties, when the opportunity arose to move to Elgin County and leave the busy city behind, I knew it was the right decision. The tranquility and calming, serene effects of the water and nature in this area inspired me to make the move and dedicate myself entirely to my art.

Artist Statement

“Life is a strange adventure and I have found that our greatest struggles and our greatest pain can also be a time of great learning, evolution and reinvention. For me, painting has been a reflective exercise, carrying me through life’s ups and downs –acting as an outlet for expressing my emotions hence the variations of color and texture in what I have produced over the years. Now, I am ready to share my work with world”.
